Himenosawa Park

Himenosawa Park is famous for flowers that fill the park all seasons and in the Country’s best 100 Parks. It is the natural park with equipment for athletics and the hand-molded earthenware for hand-on activity. There are approximately six hundred kinds of plants in a garden. Various flowers can be seen here, trees azalea to wild grasses which is almost equal to the botanical garden.

Hatsushima Tokoroten Festival

Hatsusima island

Tokoroten made from agar-agar grown in the rich waters around Hatsushima is sold as a Hatsushima specialty at the fisheries cooperative supermarket and other places. The smooth texture and rich flavor define an excellent product. The annual Tokoroten Festival, the largest festival of Hatsushima, is held during Golden Week in May, attracting around 10,000 visitors. At the festival, you can see tokoroten being made and sold, try eating it on the spot, and enjoy various other local seafood products.

This historic fireworks display that first commenced in 1952, is held not only in summer but more than 10 times annually throughout the entire year, an event unique to Atami.  Set in Atami Bay using the three sides of the surrounding mountains in the topographic form of grinding mortar, the exploding fireworks reverberate creating sound effects that resemble a large stadium.  The full impact of some 5000 fireworks set off in the night sky, reflected in the ocean water is a sight of flickering beauty not to be missed.  The finale of a sky-like “Niagara Falls” is a must-see.  The display runs for 25 minutes from 8.20 to 8.45 p.m.

Atami Castle

A sakura festival held at Atami Castle, famous as a hanami spot. Atami Castle is a popular place where you can always have fun at the many interactive corners and healing spots, but it is furthered enveloped by a resplendent feeling when spring comes. While the 200 or so sakura trees, most of them somei-yoshino, are proudly in bloom, the place becomes lively with stalls and karaoke events among others. It is also magnificent to see the spring scenery filled with Japanese sentiment, along with the beautiful landscape of the city and Sagami Bay, from the castle tower observation deck. When the flowers are in half bloom, the charming sakura flowers are lit up with illuminations.

Itokawa Promenade

The Itokawa Promenade in Atami City is known as a scenic site of the Atami Sakura (cherry blossoms) which blossom earlier than other cherry trees. They usually blossom into dark-pink flowers for a month from early January. The cherry trees are lit up during the festival period and Sakura Tea is also offered to visitors on weekends and national holidays.

Atami Baien Momiji Matsuri (Autumn Leaves Festival)

Atami Baien

Atami Baien is famous for its early blooming apricots, but visitors to the park can also enjoy what is sometimes described as "the latest-changing autumn leaves in Japan". From the end of November when the festival is being held, about 380 kinds of maple trees come into beautiful autumn color, and the undulating landscape within the park presents a wide variety of faces that can be enjoyed from lots of different angles. Visitors can also enjoy a relaxing foot bath during the daytime. Illuminations start at five in the evening, and the sight of green, yellow and red leaves against the night sky is truly spectacular. The illuminations show the leaves in a slightly different aspect from that seen in the daytime.

 At Kiunkaku and  10 satellite venues in Atami city, the artists in Atami will display a wide variety of works such as painting, sculpture, photography, ceramics, and engraving. For this year, it will be held from October 13th to November 30th, and the main events will be held for three days from October 26th (Friday) to 28th (Saturday).

This is a hula dance festival where many hula dance groups join in from around the country. With blue water and white sandy beach, a Hawaiian dance show in an atmosphere that makes you forget you are in Japan invites you to the real Hawaiian world. There are Hawaiian food stalls and Hawaiian goods shops at the venue. You can enjoy a Hawaiian day with a pleasant tone and a nice hula dance.

 Atami Izusan is a region associated with Minomotono Yoritomo, the first true samurai ruler of Japan and according to the local legend, it is said that Yoritomo ate turban shells before going into battle.  In this event there will be many stalls offering fresh seafood such as turban shells and other delicious foods. A fireworks display will be held in all three days.

Ayoshiro Onsen Maritime Fireworks Festival will be held on August 16th every year. From the Ajiro Bay along Route 135 to the Taga Bay, there will be 2000 fireworks display, Lantern floating, and bonfire event. You can enjoy spectacular scenery combining the sea fireworks in Taga Bay with the fireworks of Ajiro Bay, the light from the lantern streamer, and the torch.

It is the annual grand festival for Ajiko Shrine in southern Atami. Drum and wind instrument band performances by each groups, floats weighing over 10 tons with a mikoshi on top will be paraded around town, and the Kashima Dance, a Municipal Registered Intangible Folk Cultural Asset, are scheduled to be performed.

Held as a highlight to the "Atami Kogashi Matsuri", Kinomiya Shrine's annual festival, the "Dashi Concours" festival float contest has become a summer tradition in Atami. A gorgeous sight unfolds along Route 135, the coastal highway were the event is held, as more than 30 floats parade by sporting traditional wood carvings and other decorations. The sound of festival music played on bells, drums and flutes sings out from the floats, and the whole of Atami exudes a festival mood.

Kinomiya Shrine hosts "Kogashi Matsuri", an annual burning festival from July 14th until July 16th for the Atami people and visitors.  In commemoration of the origin story of Kinomiya Shrine, scorched wheat, wild yam, and oranges are offered to the God of Fortune and Luck who has protected people staying or traveling in Atami.

The Atami Sun Beach Resort landscape boasts beautiful views of blue sea, white sand and tree-lined date palms that stretch on in a long line.  Nagahama Swimming Beach is an artificial beach for 400m opened in 2004. It is kind of a hidden good beach and very popular among families for its quiet wave.  Ajiro Onsen Swimming Beach is a small swimming beach near the Ajiro Fishing Port. Close to Onsen ryokan Inns and very popular among families though it's away from the downtown.

The second fishing port at Hatsuhima island

In the fireworks display held on the small island of Hatsushima in Sagami Bay, they are going to set off about 1,200 fireworks!  A temporary ferry service* is set to be planned, so the visitors from Atami can also enjoy this event.

*30 minutes to Hatsushima from the Atami Port by ferry.The ferry dock at Atami Port can be reached via bus, on foot, or taxi from the Atami Station.

Himenosawa Park is famous for flowers that fills the park all seasons and in the Country’s best 100 Parks. It is the natural park with equipments for athletics and the hand-molded earthenware for hand-on activity.
There are approximately six hundred kinds of plants in a garden. Various flowers can be seen here, trees azalea to wild grasses which is almost equal to the botanical garden.

Atami Geigi Kenban

Geigi are professional artists who liven up events with traditional arts like Japanese dancing and shamisen (musical instrument).  Atami is one of the best geigi districts in the nation. Atami Geigi Kenban (a theater of Geisha performance) provides Geigi performance “Hana-no-mai” every Saturday and Sunday. To celebrete the New Year, Special geisya dance will be perfomed by Atami Geigis.  

End-of-the-year Fireworks Festival on the sea

Atami Bay

This historic fireworks display that first commenced in 1952, is held not only in summer but more than 10 times annually throughout the entire year, an event unique to Atami.  Set in Atami Bay using the three sides of the surrounding mountains in the topographic form of grinding mortar, the exploding fireworks reverberate creating sound effects that resemble a large stadium.  The full impact of some 5000 fireworks set off in the night sky, reflected in the ocean water is a sight of flickering beauty not to be missed.  The finale of a sky-like “Niagara Falls” is a must-see.  The display runs for 25 minutes from 8.20 to 8.45 p.m..
